Author Biography
Charles Robert Darwin (1809 – 1882)
Charles
Darwin was an English naturalist who formed our understanding
of evolution. He was born in Shropshire,
England into a well off family. His mother died when Darwin
was still a young boy, and he later took himself up as an
apprentice doctor with his father to treat patients in his
county of birth. His fascination for natural history began
whilst studying medicine, and was later enhanced by his voyage
on the Beagle, where he had the opportuntities
to observe and investigate wildlife and fossils and investigate
the theory of natural selection. The Beagle
survey took five years, two-thirds of which was on land, and
the other third at sea (where Charles Darwin
suffered quite severe seasickness).
By the time the Beagle had
returned, Darwin’s reputation had already
preceded him amongst certain academic circles. .
In 1839, he married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood,
and between them they had ten children, three of whom died
young. Darwin himself was marred by ill health
throughout most of his life (possibly from an insect bite
in South America). At the age of 73 he died at Down House
with his wife by his side.
