ALEXANDRE DUMAS
Classic Literary
Author Biography
Alexandre
Dumas (1802-1870)
Alexandre Dumas was a French
author (born in the vicinity of Paris) who wrote historical
adventure novels. Some of his most famous works include The
Three Misketeers, Man in the Iron Mask and The Count of Monte
Cristo.
Dumas was raised in poverty
by his mother after his father (a military man) lost his life
when Alexandre was only four years old. By the time Dumas
was a young man, his father’s old connections to those
in higher circles, enabled Dumas to gain employment at the
Palais Royal in Paris where he began writing plays for the
theatre, and magazine articles.
In 1840 Alexandre Dumas
married the actress, Ida Ferrier, although his infidelity
led to a number of illegitimate children being raised. Later
when Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in 1851, Dumas
traveled to Belgium to escape his creditors, as whilst he
was prosperous, he often spent more than he earned. From Belgium
he relocated to Russia for a couple of years, and then to
Italy.
In more recent times, French President Jacques-Chirac
had Alexandre Dumas’ body exhumed in
2002, and laid to rest at the Pantheon in Paris in a televised
event.
