DANIEL DEFOE
Classic Literary
Author Biography
Daniel Defoe (1659 – 1731)
Daniel
Defoe was best known for his fictional novel Robinson
Crusoe.
He was born in London and was educated at Stoke Newington,
leaving to become a merchant in wine, wool and hosiery, and
whilst he was successful he had a tendency to spend more than
he earned.
His political exploits saw him arrested
in 1703, after writing a pamphlet – The Shortest Way
with the Dissenters” which he satirised the High Church
Tories calling for the extermination of dissenters. He was
put into a pillory but the public threw flowers instead of
rotten fruit and unpleasantries.
Following three days in the pillory, Daniel
Defoe was sent to Newgate Prison and was released
later for his services as an intelligence agent for the Whig
government.
His famous novel, Robinson Crusoe was finished
in 1719, telling the story of a shipwreck on a deserted island.
