EDGAR BURROUGHS Classic Literary Author Biography Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875 – 1950) Edgar was born in Chicago, Illinois and later graduated at the Michigan Military Academy, however he failed the entrance exam for West Point and was enlisted as a soldier with the 7th U.S. Cavalary in Arizona, Fort Grant. He was discharged in 1897 following a problem with his heart.
With a wife, two kids and a lowly paid living, he took up writing, and created, Tarzan of the Apes, which went on to be a cultural icon. By the 1930’s he had divorced his wife, remarried Florence Dearholt (a former actress) and was publishing his own books. During World War II, Edgar Burroughs became a war correspondent, despite the fact he was now in his sixties. He died of a heart attack in 1950.
