Books. Author Biography
John Ruskin (1819 – 1900)
John
Ruskin was born in London as the son of a wine merchant.
He attended Oxford University and his first published work,
was entitled the Poetry of Architecture.
As a Victorian art critic, he was friends
with Joseph Turner the English romantic landscape
artist, and championed his artwork through his books. By the
end of the 1850’s John Ruskin moved
his focus from art to politics, writing about social justice.
Much of his later life was spent in the
Lake District, in a house called Brantwood,
which is open to the public, and by the edge of Coniston
Water.
