Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745)
Jonathan
Swift was born in Dublin to English immigrant parents,
although his father was to die a few years before Swift
was born. In 1682 he studied at Trinity College, and had to
leave for England in 1688 when troubles stirred due to the
Glorious Revolution.
In England Jonathan Swift
worked for the English diplomat Sir William Temple, and was
later introduced to William III. In 1694 he returned to Ireland
to take Holy Orders, and was ordained as a priest the following
year before returning to Sir William Temple’s country
estate.
One of his most famous works, Gulliver’s
Travels, was begun in 1720, which was completed a
few years later.
Swift died on October 19, 1745.
