LEO TOLSTOY
Literary Classic
Book Collection. Author Biography
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828 –
1910)
Leo
Tolstoy was born in Central Russia to Russian aristocrats.
His mother died when he was only two years old and his father
when he was nine, and so he was raised largely by his aunt.
Tolstoy went on to study
law and Asian language at Kazan University but was considered
a problem student, and he left before his studies were complete.
By 1852 he had completed his first novel,
Childhood and was met with immediate success. Leo
Tolstoy was a mean of leisure before joining the
army, against the Turks as part of the siege of Silistra.
In 1859 he began his own school for impovished
peasant children, and wrote many books geared for them. He
felt slightly guilty for having such wealth and frequently
invited vagrants to his home, and handed out generous sums
of money to beggars on the street.
Around the age of 34, Leo Tolstoy
married Sophie Behres, 15 years his junior. They were to have
thirteen children together, eight of whom survived childhood.
He wrote War and Peace during this period,
helped by his wife who would copy out his writing.
Tolstoy fell ill in 1901,
but his health did not affect his mind in anyway. He eventually
died in November of 1910 and was given a peasant’s burial.
