Literary Book
Collection. Author Biography
Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Conan Doyle was a Scottish
author renound for his Sherlock Holmes detective novels, but
wrote in a number of genres from science fiction, to romances,
poetry and non-fiction.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Arthur
Conan Doyle was rejected at a Roman Catholic school,
but turned to agnotisicism by his later teens. Initially he
trained as a doctor, but when his career in this field did
not take fligh, he began writing stories in his spare time,
with his first note-worthy work being published in 1887.
In the 1890’s, Conan
grew slightly wary of his Sherlock Holmes
character and plunged him and Moriarty to their deaths, falling
from a waterfall in the novel The Final Problem. An outcry
from the public forced Doyle to find a means
to bring him back to life.
Amongst his friends was the magaician, Harry
Houdini. Following the death of his wife, Doyle
had sunk into a depression and sought solace in spiritualism,
however his friend Houdini, exposed the tricks of the spiritualist
mediums to Conan, but such truths only led
to a public falling out between them.
