MARK TWAIN
Classic Literary
Author Biography and Photos
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 – 1910)
Mark
Twain was born in Florida under his real name, Samuel
Langhorne Clemens, and moved to a port town on the
Mississippi River as a young child, which would later inspire
his two most famous books, The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Mark Twain’s father
passed away when he was twelve years old, and the following
year Twain began work as a typesetter, alongside
contributing sketches and articles for the local journal (a
newspaper owned by his older brother).
He later went on to become a steamboat pilot,
which involved at least two years of study, and paid extremely
handsomely. Mark Twain got his younger brother
to work alongside him, but was killed when a steamboat he
had been working on, exploded, something Twain regretted for
the rest of his life.
As a pacifist he deserted from the Civil War
and later went on to tour other parts of America, Europe and
the Middle East.
Mark Twain died in Connecticut
from angina pectoris.
