Book Collection CD. Author Biography
Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900)
Oscar
Wilde was born in Dublin to a mother who was also
a writer, and to a father who wrote between his work as an
eye surgeon. Oscar’s education began
at home and he later attended Portora Royal School, spending
the summers with his family. From school Wilde
went on to Trinity College Dublin where he excelled and received
a scholarship to Magdalene College, Oxford.
Oscar joined an aesthetic
movement, represented by the school of William Morris
and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He was
influenced by such authors as John
Ruskin, and Oscar Wilde himself
taught aesthetics in London in 1879, before touring the US
and Canada.
Oscar Wilde met Florence
Balcombe, and was heart broken when she announced her engagement
to Bram
Stoker. He left Ireland to visited London, Paris
and the US. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd and together
they had two sons. It was reported that a year after his marriage,
Wilde was introduced to homosexuality, although
his homosexual feelings had been expressed long before. He
was to later be sentenced to two years hard labour for acts
of gross indecency.
Oscar Wilde died in November
1900 from cerebral meningitis. He is buried in Pere
Lachaise, Paris.
