Author Biography
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 – 1894)
Robert
Louis Stevenson (born Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson)
was raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. From his father (a lighthouse
designer) he got his love of the sea and adventure, and his
grandfather, a professor of moral philosophy, he developed
his sense of morality.
Robert Louis Stevenson
suffered from poor lungs as a child, not helped by the Scottish
climate. He later attended the University of Edinburgh to
follow in his father’s footsteps, but realised writing
was his passion.
He frequented Paris and its neighbouring
districts, and it was here he met Fanny Osbourne in 1876 who
was to become his wife in 1880 over in the States.
Between 1880 – 1887 Robert
Louis Stevenson desperately searched for a location
to suit his poor health. During this period he wrote some
of his best known works – Treasure Island,
Kidnapped and Jekyll and Hyde.
When his father passed away in 1887. Robert took his mother
and family to the United States. They spent the winter at
Saranac Lake, New York, and then in 1888 they set sail for
San Francisco.
Stevenson died in 1894 of cerebral hemorrhage
whilst with his wife.
