Literary Classic
Book Collection. Author Biography
T.S. Eliot (1888 – 1965)
Thomas
Stearns Eliot was born in Missouri into a well-off
family, as a late sixth child (his sisters were between one
and two decades older than Thomas). TS Eliot
studied at Smith Academy and following his education there
in 1905, went on to Milton Academy for one year before going
to Harvard.
During the outbreak of the First World War,
TS Eliot came to London and married Vivienne
Haigh-Wood.
After marriage, TS Eliot worked
at Highgate School and then at the Royal Grammar School in
High Wycombe, earning extra money on the side by writing book
reviews. In 1917 he took a job with Lloyds Bank, and by 1925
became the director of Faber and Gwyer, publishing
firm.
In 1927 Eliot became a British citizen and converted to Anglicanism.
His marriage was beginning to break down and soon after led
to a separation, however he did not remarry until 1957 to
his former secretary at Faber and Gwyer, some 38 years his
junior.
TS Eliot died of emphysema
in 1965.
