GOETHE Literary Classic Book Collection. Author Biography Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) Goethe was both a poet, novelist, scientist and philosopher. He was born into a prosperous family and lived in Frankfurt, Germany. From a young age he was taught many disciplines from multiple languages to fencing, horse riding and dancing and went on to study law.
Whilst in Strasbourg, Goethe was befriended by Johann Gottfried Herder, and became close friends – it was Johann who introduced the young Goethe to Shakespeare. In 1772 he practiced law at Wetzlar, and held a political office as a Duke’s chief adviser in 1775. During the French revolution, Goethe often wrote to his family telling them of killings and lootings during the French attack of Prussia. Goethe died in Weimar in 1832.
